What is CREW?

CREW stands for the regular Coaching, Reflection, Enrichment and Well-being. We aim to create an educational environment where students take independent ownership of their character, ambitions and productivity, and where we add value to, and are valued by, the local community. The ethos of Crew runs throughout Meridian House embedded in the academic and wider curriculum.

All of our staff and students are also part of a Crew, a small group that meet with two staff leaders and their Crew Group each morning .  This is timetabled as a lesson in its own right and is an investment in time that benefits all subject areas. Our staff form their own Crew each day when they meet to reflect on the lessons and day.

Crew is two things. “It is a school-wide culture that supports social and emotional wellness, character development, and academic and life success for students and staff. It is also a unique and transformational meeting structure for school morning, closing circles, and for staff collaboration.” Ron Berger, CEO of Expeditionary Learning Schools is considered to be the architect of Crew, and EL schools have been practicing it for 25 years. The quote above is taken from the introduction to his book “We Are Crew”.

“We are crew, not passengers.”
